Urban Artificial Intelligence: From Automation to Autonomy in the Smart City.

What Role Will Robots Play in Smart Cities ?

Our cities are becoming too big for humans to be managed by only "politicians".

An AI  24/7  Governance is required to bridge this human gap.

Robocitizen and Citizen

National Governments are in competition to position themselves on the global politico-economic landscape through robotics, and they are also striving to position themselves as worldwide leaders.

With smart city projects on the drawing board worldwide, cities are becoming more integrated with information and communication technologies; this would enable them to increase operational efficiency, share information with the public and improve both the quality of government services and citizen welfare.

The advent of autonomous unmanned vehicles have led to opportunities for highly skilled workers such as robotics technicians and automation technicians to operate and maintain these vehicles.

Ubiquitous sensors in mobile robots, aerial drones, and autonomous vehicles, plus connections to municipal infrastructure through the Internet of Things, promise more efficient delivery of utilities and reduced traffic, among other things.

While the variety of sensors and applications for smart cities has grown rapidly in recent years, a lot of work remains, especially in the areas of machine learning to analyze and interpret the data from these sensors.

The world is entering an age in which autonomous robotics are emerging quickly in a pervasive way.

The skies will get smarter before the ground.

Key sensor innovation will happen in the sky before it happens on the ground.

Drones are years away, while cars and robotics will take at least a decade before they prove safe at scale.

For this reason, meaningful innovation will take place [in the air] first.

Drone hardware will enable heavier payloads and longer flight times.

Sensors will get smaller, better and cheaper.

Governments and industries will lift regulations and restrictions.

Fri, 26 Mar 2021 11:40:52 -0400 Mind Upload http://www.elitestudiodesign.ca/blog/news/mind-upload.html http://www.elitestudiodesign.ca/blog/news/mind-upload.html

In a future of mind uploading, will you still be you ?

Imagine that a person’s brain could be scanned in great detail and recreated in a computer simulation. The person’s mind and memories, emotions and personality would be duplicated. In effect, a new and equally valid version of that person would now exist, in a potentially immortal, digital form.

Mind uploading is a popular term for a process by which the mind, a collection of memories, personality, and attributes of a specific individual, is transferred from its original biological brain to an artificial computational substrate. Alternative terms for mind uploading have appeared in fiction and non-fiction, such as mind transfer, mind downloading, off-loading, side-loading, and several others. They all refer to the same general concept of “transferring” the mind to a different substrate.
Once it is possible to move a mind from one substrate to another, it is then called a substrate-independent mind (SIM). The concept of SIM is inspired by the idea of designing software that can run on multiple computers with different hardware without needing to be rewritten. For example, Java’s design principle “write once, run everywhere” makes it a platform independent system. In this context, substrate is a term referring to a generalized concept of any computational platform that is capable of universal computation.
We take the materialist position that the human mind is solely generated by the brain and is a function of neural states. Additionally, we assume that the neural states are computational processes and devices capable of universal computing are sufficient to generate the same kind of computational processes found in a brain.

Autonomous vehicle technology is moving into areas like shared taxis, goods delivery and space economy. Unlike some predictions about an AV in every garage, experts say the near-term looks quite different.

Autonomous vehicle technology companies like Mobileye are aiming to launch “robo-taxis” in the coming years, while similar companies are exploring goods movement and other uses for vehicles without onboard operators.

“Currently, we are looking at multiple cities around the world where we are going to start operating a production service of robo-taxis in 2022,” said Nir Erez, founder and CEO of Moovit, an Israeli mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) provider and trip-planning app.

Intel Corporation, which includes Mobileye as a subsidiary, recently acquired Moovit for $900 million. The venture places the MaaS expertise of Moovit firmly within the autonomous leader Mobileye.

“It is going to be a gradual process of a few dozen, or maybe a few hundred of vehicles roaming in a gradual way,” said Erez, speaking last Wednesday with CoMotion CEO John Rossant during the CoMotion Miami conference.

Erez described the impending evolution of robo-taxis as gradual, starting with “a relatively small footprint" and developing and evolving in clearly defined corridors.

Algorithms are shaping our society

AI is here today, it’s not just the future of technology. It’s embedded inside every product.

Algorithms controls every action we take.

Today, it can be difficult to understand the social impact that artificial intelligence (AI) has for humanity kind.

And it is still not clear what we should ultimately expect from this exponential technology.

What is clear: AI-powered products and services have made it into nearly every aspect of our personal and professional lives in just a few years.

And as AI solutions continue to emerge and converge, this state of art will only continue to accelerate.

It’s easy to find scenarios of a utopian future of abundance where machines do all the hard work—as well as blurred scenarios where workers are replaced by increasingly capable "smart" machines.

With such rapid progress, it’s difficult to make assumptions about the future of AI. But instead of focusing on the unknown, we can examine the potential future impact.

Why algorithmic awareness matters

Algorithmic transparency is an important safeguard for accountability and fairness in decision-making. From various AI applications to ranking results in search engines, algorithms govern the way we access information online. This has large implications for consumers and businesses in areas such as online platforms. Understanding algorithmic transparency in an in-depth manner is key for informed policy-making.

Raising awareness and gathering evidence about the challenges and opportunities of algorithmic decisions.

What is AnanasStepper ?

An advanced motion control system to make machine tasks powerful and precise. Wide applications: 3D printers, 6+ axis robotic arm, etc.

High angle precision in shaft motion rotation

AnanasStepper 3.0 is a smart device with a STM32 MCU as a controller and allows you to capture the position, current and temperature of itself, using a 15 bits magnetic encoder (TLE5012B) with a resolution of 0.01° and two 12 bits DAC to control the resolution of current to reach up to 256 micro-steps.

With its high expansion capability, AnanasStepper 3.0 can be adapted up to 200 times as a series connection. On Bus Mode (CAN Bus | RS-485), all the wiring needed is power (12V-24V) and a twisted pair for serial comms to link them all together. On Step/Dir Pulse mode, the interface is compatible with 3D Printer System | CNC (Mech/Linux CNC ) and more.

CAN Bus
A CAN bus and RS-485 bus has some benefits in this application. Multiple motors can be connected to one controller via a single bus. At low bit rates, it can work on kilometer-long buses. The wiring is simple and cheap: two wires twisted together with no shielding requirements. It’s also designed to be reliable in high noise environments such as cars and trucks.

You can even use USB to control the system, for a very simple and user friendly installation.

AnanasStepper is developed using Python and C/C++ programming languages. We are an enthusiastic supporter of the open source community. All design files are available under a permissive license and community & commercial support are available.

AnanasStepper supports the majority of software systems, including Max OS, Linux and Windows systems.

Just one kilometer east of downtown Toronto, the largest civil engineering project in North America is reshaping the course of the Don River, a major waterway.

“We’re extending the Don by about 2 kilometers,” says Cam Coleman, a communications director with the Canadian construction firm EllisDon. Once the project is complete, a canyon of caissons, drilled 40 to 80 meters into the bedrock and filled with concrete, will carry the river southward, through a largely vacant industrial area known as the Port Lands and out into Lake Ontario. The result will be a whole new set of neighborhoods -- 750 acres of waterfront property near the heart of a big city that is growing prodigiously.

The new area will fill up rapidly. Looking back toward downtown on a recent morning, Coleman pointed out a new island rising just opposite a fire-gutted warehouse on the docks. At the moment, it’s a pile of mud. But in a few years’ time -- if all goes according to one tech giant’s plan -- it will be the home of Google’s Canadian headquarters. It will also be the center of the most technologically advanced neighborhood in the world.

Revitalizing a waterfront, changing the course of a river, setting the rules by which neighborhoods operate -- these are things that government, not the private sector, has traditionally done. Government initially took the lead in reimagining Toronto’s waterfront, too. Back in 2001, the federal, provincial and local governments teamed up to create a new entity, Waterfront Toronto, charged with doing just that. The parks, trails and high-rise buildings rising along the harborfront today testify to that strategy’s success.

Toronto, Ontario and Canadian governments contracted with Sidewalk Labs, a sister company of Google, to come up with a $50 million design for a dozen acres on the waterfront’s far eastern end.

The idea is to reimagine Toronto’s derelict waterfront as “the world’s first neighborhood built from the internet up,” as Sidewalk describes it.

The neighborhood, called Quayside, would leapfrog the usual slow walk of gentrification to build an entire zone, all at once, as a “smart city,” a sensor-enabled, highly wired metropolis that can run itself.
